A Letter from Our Founder

Picture a working-class kid who grew up in public housing dropping out of high school. Hardly anyone would bet any money on him succeeding academically. But through his own grit and determination, he got himself into the University of Hong Kong, and later despite all odds, gained admission into Cambridge with a full scholarship, and graduated with a master's degree in history.

This might sound like a fantasy, but it is my story. To this day, I can scarcely believe my own journey. Whenever I reflect on my own experience, I am reminded of the fact that I couldn't have done it without the support and encouragement from my mentors I'd received along the way. But at the end of the day, it was my grit and the many nights of studying in the library that got me here.

All this is to tell you, your university dream is not unattainable. All Luminis tutors, like myself, came from humble roots and would not have imagined the academic success they enjoy today. But through hard work and the right learning method, they managed to defy all odds and become respected scholars today. 

​

We know all too well how the current education system is stifling the intellectual growth of many gifted students. One of our core missions is to unlock the potential of these students, by matching them with the right tutor and the right learning format. At Luminis, we hope to help students break out from the cocoon and spread their wings. 

 

Life is replete with challenges and adversity. It's not gonna change after you've grown up, got yourself into university, or entered society as a full-fledged adult. I am not going to tell you that the path is ahead is going to be easy. It will not be. But for now, for this brief part of your journey, you have us. And we are here to guide you through the uncharted waters ahead.
